The High Functioning Trap:
Looking Fine While Carrying Everything

By Jason Kron, MBA, MIM, LCMHCA, LCASA

In my 20 years in finance and analytics, I watched a lot of capable people become very skilled at looking fine.

They hit deadlines, exceeded targets, and showed up with answers. From the outside, they looked steady and successful.

Underneath, it was often a different story. Anxiety. Insomnia. Substance use. Relationship strain. Exhaustion that never really let up.

Now, as a clinician, I see the same pattern in a different setting. High performers are often the least likely to ask for help because competence has become part of their identity. Struggle starts to feel like failure.

The people who look the most put together are often carrying far more than anyone realizes.

Real wellbeing is not just continuing to function. It is being able to perform without sacrificing your health, your relationships, your sleep, or your sense of self.
