When Your Career Becomes Your Identity

By Jason Kron, MBA, MIM, LCMHCA, LCASA

A hard meeting does not just feel frustrating.
It feels personal.

A missed target does not feel like a setback.
It feels like exposure.

Time away from work does not feel restorative.
It feels unsettling.

Long before I became a clinician, I saw a lot of professionals build their identity around being the reliable one, the capable one, the one who could carry pressure without breaking.

Now, I see the cost of that more clearly.

One way to think about this is identity enmeshment, when your job stops being something you do and starts becoming who you are.

When that happens, burnout is not just physical exhaustion. It is disorientation. If achievement has become the foundation of how you value yourself, even small disruptions can start to feel like a threat to who you are.

That is why some of the most capable professionals struggle the most to slow down. Rest feels risky when performance becomes identity.

A lot of professionals do not just need time off.

They need a self that is bigger than their role.
