What Is A Substance Use Intensive Outpatient Program

By Sarah R. Coates, LCMHC, NCC

At One-Eighty Counseling, we understand that the journey to recovery from substance use is deeply personal—and often complex. That’s why we’re proud to introduce our new Substance Use Intensive Outpatient Program (SAIOP), designed to offer compassionate, structured care that supports individuals in reclaiming their lives while maintaining everyday responsibilities.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An IOP provides a middle ground between inpatient treatment and standard outpatient care. It’s ideal for individuals who need more support than weekly therapy can offer but don’t require 24/7 supervision in a residential setting.
Our IOP is built to fit into your life, offering group treatment sessions 3 mornings a week. We provide evidence-based therapies and a holistic approach to wellness—all while allowing participants to live at home and continue with work, school, or family commitments.

What Makes Our IOP Unique?

1. Personalized Care Plans:

Every participant receives a tailored treatment plan that addresses their unique needs, history, and goals. We take a collaborative approach, working closely with each individual to design their path to recovery.

2. Evidence-Based Treatment Modalities:

Our program incorporates proven methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care, and relapse prevention strategies.

3. Group and Individual Support:

Participants engage in both individual therapy and group sessions, providing a balanced mix of personal guidance and peer connection—two essential components of long-term recovery.

4. Family Involvement:

We believe healing involves the whole system. Our program offers education and support for families, helping them understand substance use disorders and build healthier relationships.

5. Holistic Wellness Integration:

Recovery is about more than abstinence. We incorporate Wellness Wednesdays in our program, bringing in therapists and dieticians to teach mindfulness, stress management and nutrition education.

We also offer sessions with a master Reiki therapist. We believe incorporating self-care strategies to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being are essential to whole recovery.

Who Is This Program For?

Our IOP is appropriate for adults (ages 18+) who are:
• Transitioning from inpatient or residential treatment
• Experiencing moderate to severe substance use challenges
• Seeking structured support without leaving work or home obligations
• Motivated to make meaningful changes in a supportive environment

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Recovery is possible—and we’re here to walk with you. Whether you’re seeking help for yourself or a loved one, our team is ready to answer your questions and guide you through the intake process.

You are not alone—and hope begins here. Learn more about our Intensive Outpatient Program at our Garner location.
